I only grow determinate (bush) varieties. I only grow 'open pollinated' heirloom varieties. This means I can save seed and the plants generally have better resistance to disease and climatic conditions. F1 plants have a narrow genetic base, and can't always adapt to local conditions.
I grow three or four plants in a raised bed about 4 x 4 foot square. I hammer heavy stakes approximately four feet in length into each corner of the raised bed. I run a rope across the stakes (think of a boxing ring). The plants grow quite happily, with sufficient support provided by the rope. It's a crude system, but it's effective and pretty low maintenance. Simply water and enjoy your tomatoes!
