You will get more substantial plants without sacrificing production if you "bury" your tomato bush at least halfway up the stem. The leaves will develop roots and help keep the bush stronger when it produces.
Also, plant you tomatoes in the fall and "save" them through the winter and you will have a bunch of tomatoes in the spring.
